Shropshire’s young farmers federation has declared this year’s annual rally its best yet after 1,000 visitors flocked to watch the 75 different competitions.Despite the rain, people packed Buckley Farm, Maesbury, for the 2012 rally and ball on Saturday. There were up to 14 entries in each category, ranging from crafts, flower arranging and cookery to sheep shearing and bricklaying.County President Rachael Parry said it had been another successful year.

She said: “This is one of our last big competitions of the year and it has gone very well. It is very competitive, everyone really wants to win. The people get very excited and it is very sociable.

She added:?“The weather hasn’t caused too many problems, when it does rain it brings the farmers here because they cannot do work on the farm. “Because of our location people in the borders and other counties come along, we are very well supported.” Entries were made from all 19 Young Farmers’ groups across Shropshire and a lot of the competitions held at the rally were national competitions where members can represent Shropshire in the finals if they win. Last year Clun won the overall competition and secretary of Shropshire Young Farmers, Kim Legge, said this year’s event had been a great success. She said: “It is nice to have all the clubs together and we are getting bigger and better every year.”

Malcom Trow, from Marton, is a former county chair of the Young Farmers’ Federation and went to watch his son in the sheep shearing competition. He said: “It is growing in size. Shropshire is one of the best supported young farmers groups now with about 900 members.” Jaci Dale, from Church Stretton, went to the event with her husband and young daughter. She said: “I was a young farmer and it is nice to come back again. I don’t recognise any of the faces but they are very innovative with the events they put on and it has developed over the years.” James and Jenny Potter, from Pontesbury, said: “We come every year, it is very good how they have different competitions, it is never the same.”
